No: 85: Glan Garnant Colliery

As usual each year I produce a wagon for friends and relatives to give the railway modeller/collector as a gift for Christmas.  In 2009 this was the Glan Garnant Colliery wagon from the Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen branch near Ammanford.

141 pristine and 70 weathered wagons were produced by Dapol and released in early December 2009 - though the identity was kept secret until after Christmas Day - well mostly!

Mr Tony Wooding sent in this item he read recently:-

"A horse drawn tramway ran from Llanelly toGorslas in 1802, but was abandoned by 1830.
The Llanelly Dock Co was formed in 1828 todevelop coal workings to the N.E. of the town around Llangenneck & a horse drawn tramway to Dafen was in operation in 1833, which after various alterations & extensions by 1903 was now the Llanelly Railway & Dock Co with another extension along the Loughor Valley. In fact the first 6 miles to Pontardulais was opened in 1839.  By 1841 a further 10 miles to Pantyffynon & then NE along the Amman Valley to Garnant  "high in the Black Mts." This tapped into various coal workings along with iron founders in the area including that of Garnant.  No details on the Tonnage etc.
There was a yet further extension in 1842 NE from Garnant to Brynamman."
